Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria with the Tsarevets fortress, is about 210 km north of Plovdiv. The drive takes around 3 hours and crosses the Balkan Mountains through the Shipka Pass, with views of the Valley of the Roses and the Shipka memorial on the way.
